A playground is an extremely important part of every nursery. It is a place where children can not only play but also develop their motor, social and cognitive skills. A well-designed playground can significantly affect children’s development, providing opportunities for learning through play. When setting up a playground, attention must be paid to many important factors; unfortunately, the small spaces that nurseries have to work with force us to find ways of making maximum use of the available area. So what should be given particular attention? We will try to offer some suggestions in our article.

Safety above all

Safety at the playground is an absolute priority. There is no room for compromise here – all fittings should be made from durable, non-toxic materials and hold the necessary certificates. Regardless of the size of the space, every piece of equipment should be certified and meet safety standards. In Poland there are specific regulations for playgrounds, including the PN-EN 1176 and PN-EN 1177 standards, which set out the requirements for the design, installation and maintenance of equipment. One of the basic elements of safety is the surface. Choosing the right type can significantly affect the cushioning of falls and reduce the risk of injury. The most commonly used materials are sand, rubber mats and synthetic grass. Each of these materials has its advantages and disadvantages, so it is worth analysing carefully which of them will be best for a particular playground.

Choosing equipment suited to children’s age and needs

When designing a playground in a nursery, the age and developmental needs of the children must be taken into account. Toddlers aged 3–5 need equipment that allows them to develop motor coordination, balance and muscle strength. Small slides, ladders, tunnels and climbing walls work perfectly here. Older nursery children will appreciate more complex equipment, such as fitness sets or rope equipment, which offer more challenges and possibilities for play. It is important for a playground to include elements suitable for different age groups and skill levels. An equally important aspect is the aesthetics and friendliness of the place. Colourful, eye-catching equipment encourages children to play and spend time outdoors. Attractive decorative elements can also serve educational functions, for example boards with letters and numbers that children can learn during play. In small spaces it is worth paying attention to multifunctional solutions that save space.

Creative solutions for a small space

Even if a nursery has a limited space for a playground, there are many ways to create an attractive and functional play area. It is worth opting for multifunctional equipment that combines several activities, e.g. a slide with a ladder and a climbing wall. Swings are a classic element of every playground. In small spaces it is worth considering compact models that take up less room, for example spring swings or bird’s-nest swings, which can accommodate several children at once. Roundabouts can also be a great addition to a playground, especially if we choose small-diameter models that do not require much space. Sandpits are a great way to develop children’s creativity and manual skills. In small spaces it is worth considering folding or closable sandpits, which can easily be secured after the nursery’s working hours.

Attractive extras and facilities

To make a nursery playground truly appealing to children, it is worth thinking about additional facilities and decorative elements. Colourful manipulation boards or sensory panels add variety to play and stimulate children’s creativity. Benches and tables are also important, where children can rest or sit down during shared play. A good idea is to create a themed playground, e.g. with a playhouse or a pirate ship, which will stimulate children’s imagination. It is also worth remembering to shade part of the playground adequately, so that children can spend time outside comfortably even on hot days.
