Safety surfacing for playgrounds and gyms

Safety surfacing for playgrounds and gyms

Four types of safety surfacing for playgrounds and outdoor gyms.

Cushioning sand surfaces

A natural base such as sand is the most popular and most commonly used type of safety surfacing for playgrounds and beyond. The greatest advantage of this type of surfacing is its low cost and relatively good cushioning properties. It should be remembered, however, that keeping a sand surface in good condition is quite expensive, as it involves regular checks and work to remove moss and weeds, as well as replacing the sand – removing the old and bringing in fresh, clean sand to the same spot.

Grass-mat surfaces

The anti-slip rubber mat is made from recycled materials. The mat's openwork structure allows grass to grow through, so the mats become invisible and users can enjoy a green carpet of grass. Thanks to its properties, a playground mat significantly increases children's safety during play and also improves safety for people exercising outdoors.

Grass mats laid as flooring for outdoor gyms or playgrounds are regarded as safety surfacing.

Rubber-tile surfaces – SBR or EPDM

Another popular and safe solution in terms of durability and easy maintenance, which can be used when building a new playground or gym or reconstructing an existing one. The tiles are available in various colours, which little ones will surely love. Surfacing made of SBR granulate tiles is flexible, stable, water-permeable, anti-slip and easy to maintain. EPDM tile surfacing has a two-layer structure. The base is made of SBR granulate, while the top layer is EPDM. EPDM tile surfacing works excellently on strongly sunlit playgrounds or outdoor gyms.

Polyurethane EPDM surfaces (poured)

Poured surfacing made of SBR and EPDM granulate is also very popular. This type of surfacing makes it possible to create interesting colour effects on the playground floor. The surface is poured seamlessly (it has no joints), so it can be shaped into interesting, freeform designs. An undoubted advantage is free water drainage, which is why we lay the surfacing on an aggregate base for good rainwater permeability. With this surfacing, the quality of the materials and correct installation play a major role. Let's colour children's world in the colours of the rainbow.
