Parametric Bench Lips πŸ’‹

The 'Love' parametric bench is the company's own design. It was created as a combination of modern urban street furniture, parametric design and carpentry craft.

The object was designed and made for the public space of the city of Ustka. The form inspired by the shape of lips is not accidental β€” it refers both to the symbolism of closeness and conversation and to the name of the city itself.

It's not just an urban bench but also a functional sculptural form meant to encourage stopping, resting and spending time together.

Parametric design inspired by an organic form

The design was created using parametric-design technology. The characteristic arrangement of repeating ribs creates a smooth, organic solid with a soft line and a changing visual perception depending on the angle of view and the light.

The form is designed to keep a balance between:

  • a functional role,
  • structural durability,
  • and the object's sculptural character.

Despite its unusual form, the bench remains a fully functional piece of urban furniture. The ergonomics have been tested in practice β€” the solid naturally 'wraps around' users, creating a comfortable place to sit for two people or a family with a child.

An urban parametric bench designed for public space

'Usta' (Lips) was designed as an object fitting into the seaside character of the promenade and the walking space.

The bench's form:

  • encourages interaction,
  • creates a natural meeting point,
  • and acts as a characteristic element of the public space.

Thanks to its form, the object functions at the same time as:

  • an urban bench,
  • a modern functional sculpture,
  • and a place photographed by residents and tourists.

Waterproof plywood and a conscious approach to durability

The bench is made of waterproof plywood protected with an additional anti-fungal coating and two layers of water-based varnish, adapted to demanding weather conditions and the seaside climate.

The material was chosen deliberately:

  • lets the warm and natural character of the form be kept,
  • works well with the design's organic geometry,
  • enables making large, precisely milled elements,
  • and fits well into the space of the promenade and urban greenery.

In many of our realisations we useexotic wood, such as Iroko or Sapeli, which is more durable and practically requires no servicing. In the case of the 'Usta' (Lips) project, however, using solid wood was not possible because of the geometry and the large formats of the individual structural elements.

The plywood allowed the smoothness of the form and the stability of the whole object to be kept, but it requires periodic inspections and maintenance of the protective coating. That's why the design was also developed with easy servicing and seasonal protection of the furniture in mind.

Construction and the option of seasonal dismantling

Because of the winter weather conditions, a system of two-part steel feet was used, whose task is to:

  • isolating the plywood from the damp ground,
  • limiting the drawing-up of moisture,
  • improving the ventilation of the lower structural elements,
  • and quick assembly and disassembly.

The construction enables the object to be quickly unscrewed using four bolts, which allows the furniture to be seasonally protected during winter, increasing its durability.

It's a conscious approach to designing street furniture β€” taking into account both the aesthetics and the conditions of use.
